…Commanders Discretion is a non-punitive process. The decision to use, or not to use, Commanders Discretion rests solely with the CDR. The exercise of commander’s discretion should be considered exceptional and should be avoided for flights starting from home base where commander´s discretion is necessary on the outbound flight. In such cases standby crew members should be available. However, a flight may be started from home base even if it is known that on the return flight commander´s discretion will be necessary. In such cases the CDR makes the decision before the return flight to accept commander´s discretion or not. If not, the flight may be re-planned to either stay overnight at the destination or start the return flight and land at an alternate airport before the FDP limit has been reached.
